Much of the details surrounding the judging of the NKBA Excellence in Design Awards are shrouded in secrecy, and for good reason. On Saturday 20 July, in Melbourne, the winners will be announced at a glittery awards ceremony at the Crown Aviary. All the mystery makes for a fantastic awards ceremony and certainly adds to the excitement of the evening.
Last month in Auckland, NKBA held the judging of the awards with our panel of five industry experts. The 2019 judges included Alice Lines of homestyle magazine, Natalie Du Bois of Du Bois Design, Chris Tate of Chris Tate Architecture, Damian Hannah of German Kitchens and Leonie Metge of Cube Dentro.
What we can share from this year’s judging is that several strong themes were observed. The first was a good level of bathroom entries, with several of the judges commenting that 2019 had given them a high calibre of bathrooms to judge. Many of the bathroom entries had bespoke solutions, with beautiful detailing, right through to the lighting and finishes. This was fantastic to see.
Texture was noted in many of the kitchen and bathroom entries. The right use of colour, texture and materials all adds to the space and judges were delighted to see this trend. Stone, wood and black appeared to be a popular choice in several of the spaces entered, as was the increased use of dramatic lighting.
This year was also the year of the first-time entrants, with many designers putting their hat in the ring. Judges enjoyed seeing fresh ideas coming through from all the new entrants. Well done.
Thank you to all the designers who entered in the 2019 NKBA Excellence in Design Awards. It’s only a short few weeks before the winning kitchen and bathroom spaces will be announced. We can’t wait to share all the beautiful details with you and celebrate with the winners in Melbourne!
