This sensitive renovation transformed a compact 1903 heritage cottage into a timeless and highly functional forever home, with the kitchen reimagined as its social and aesthetic heart. Following a poorly conceived 1970s extension that had compromised the home’s flow and architectural integrity, the brief focused on restoring authenticity, improving spatial connection and creating a kitchen that felt as though it had always belonged within the original cottage.

A key design move involved removing an internal wall to expand the kitchen into the adjoining dining area, creating greater openness, improved natural light and stronger connections between the kitchen, dining and living spaces. Careful planning ensured the compact footprint remained highly functional, with efficient work zones, generous storage and a layout designed to support contemporary living while respecting the character of the home.

The impressive 3.2-metre ceiling height provided an opportunity to maximise storage through full-height cabinetry, while maintaining proportions appropriate to the cottage’s scale. A custom powder-coated aluminium ladder allows access to upper cabinetry and has become a distinctive feature within the space.

Material selections drew inspiration from the home’s heritage character, incorporating panelled cabinetry, aged brass hardware and a colour palette informed by the original architecture and new timber sash windows. A standout feature is the softly curved buffet, which introduces a subtle contemporary element while providing additional storage and a dedicated beverage centre. Recycled matai and rimu reclaimed from the original flooring were carefully integrated into the design, reinforcing the connection to the cottage’s history. The result is a warm, enduring kitchen that honours the home’s heritage while supporting modern family life.
