Designed as the guest bathroom within a newly built coastal home, Winter Light is a refined retreat created for visitors during the cooler months of the year. Inspired by the timeless simplicity of modern Italian villas and reinterpreted through a contemporary New Zealand coastal lens, the bathroom balances practicality with understated luxury, offering guests a calm and welcoming experience.
Despite its compact footprint and limited natural light, the design feels bright, spacious and connected to the surrounding landscape. A carefully considered palette of pale textured surfaces reflects daylight from a skylight and small feature window, creating softness, depth and a gentle sense of movement throughout the room. The restrained material selection ensures the bathroom complements the wider home without competing with the primary ensuites.
The centrepiece of the design is a bespoke stone vanity crafted from a stunning quartzite. Selected for its resemblance to the rolling coastal landscape beyond, the stone was meticulously pattern-matched to create the appearance of a monolithic carved block. Concealed storage within the stone-clad form maintains clean architectural lines while providing practical functionality for guests.
Chocolate-toned tapware and accessories introduce warmth and contrast, while a custom asymmetrical mirror adds a unique sculptural element that reflects the home’s architectural language. An open shower, recessed niches and streamlined detailing maximise the sense of space.
The result is a sophisticated and serene guest bathroom where carefully crafted materials, bespoke detailing and a strong connection to place create a memorable and enduring experience.
