Designed for a young and growing family, The Rural Modernist balances practicality, connection, and timeless style within a beautifully extended rural home. With two young children and a new baby on the way, the clients wanted a kitchen that would support the demands of family life while creating an inviting space for entertaining and socialising.
Developed from the architectural plans before construction began, the design was shaped by a deep understanding of the family’s lifestyle, routines, and love of gathering with friends and family. A symmetrical layout was chosen to create visual balance and calm, while multiple access points and carefully considered appliance placement ensure effortless movement throughout the space. Food storage zones were strategically positioned at opposite ends of the kitchen to reduce congestion and enhance functionality during busy periods.
At the heart of the design is a generous island that serves as both a dedicated preparation area and a social hub, allowing the cook to remain connected to family and guests. Extensive storage provides everyday practicality, while farm-style thermoform cabinetry reflects the character of the rural setting and complements the age of the home. Personal touches, including the incorporation of stone from the clients’ previous home, add warmth and continuity.
The result is a welcoming, entertainment-focused kitchen that seamlessly blends modern functionality with timeless rural charm.
