This renovation transformed a compact country cottage kitchen into a highly functional and welcoming space that better supports the lifestyle of its owners while celebrating the home’s rural setting. Located within a light-filled 115m² cottage overlooking paddocks and orchards, the brief focused on significantly improving storage, workflow and usability without increasing the existing footprint. The clients wanted a modern country-style kitchen that complemented the home’s character, maintained important sightlines to the surrounding landscape and comfortably accommodated both everyday use and visiting guests.
Working within a challenging footprint of just 4m by 2.18m, the design carefully maximises every available centimetre. A cathedral ceiling, large sliding window and limited wall space influenced the layout, requiring thoughtful planning to balance functionality with openness. Relocating the sink to the peninsula improved workflow and created a more social environment, allowing views toward the dining space while enhancing the relationship between preparation, cooking and storage zones.
Storage was a primary focus throughout the project. A full-height pantry with space-saving trombone doors, concealed appliance storage, pull-out accessories, drawer organisers and custom cabinetry solutions ensure the kitchen performs well beyond its modest size. Seating for two at the peninsula further enhances its role as a gathering place.
A restrained palette of simple materials and light tones allows the surrounding landscape to remain the hero. The result is a warm, efficient and beautifully resolved kitchen that comfortably supports multiple users while remaining perfectly suited to the character of the country cottage.
