This boutique apartment kitchen renovation reimagined a compact Parnell apartment for a homeowner transitioning from a large villa to apartment living. Designed as both a highly functional workspace and a place for connection, the kitchen needed to support everyday cooking, Chinese tea rituals, informal entertaining and daily dining, while reflecting the client’s personality, lifestyle and collection of treasured objects.

Natalie Du Bois of Du Bois Design was engaged to redesign the kitchen and create a seamless relationship with the adjoining living spaces, including fireplace detailing, custom joinery and material continuity throughout. The existing kitchen lacked character and storage, so the design focused on creating a more generous and sophisticated apartment kitchen with improved functionality and a stronger sense of identity.

Storage was significantly increased through layered cabinetry solutions, island storage, a concealed tea room and a Blum REVEGO pocket-door drinks station that can be opened for entertaining and hidden away when not in use. Open shelving provides a dedicated display area for Chinese tea vessels and earthenware, while extensive concealed storage accommodates specialty ingredients, cookware and small appliances.

The island was designed as the heart of the space, replacing the need for a separate dining table and comfortably seating four people. Rich, tactile materials including stained ash timber, leathered stone, bronzed brass and handcrafted finishes create warmth, depth and visual interest. The result is a beautifully crafted kitchen that balances cultural significance, everyday functionality and refined apartment living.
