This renovation transformed a previously divided kitchen, dining and living space into a light-filled, highly functional hub for a busy family of four. Having lived in their home for more than a decade, the clients wanted a kitchen that better supported everyday family life and impromptu entertaining, while maintaining the home’s existing character and structural elements.

Working within the constraints of existing windows, doors, ceiling beams and two structural posts, the design focused on creating openness and connection. The posts became a design feature through the use of vertical timber battens and open shelving, providing visual interest without interrupting sightlines. A reconfigured layout improved functionality while preserving key architectural elements, with the sink remaining beneath the existing window and a new window introduced to create space for an integrated fridge and pantry.

At the heart of the design is a striking stone-clad island featuring Florim Calacatta porcelain and a cantilevered timber tabletop, creating a warm and inviting gathering space. Positioning the cooktop on the island allows the cook to remain connected with family and guests while preparing meals, supporting the clients’ desire for a more social kitchen. Thoughtfully integrated storage, refined material selections and careful spatial planning have resulted in a contemporary, welcoming space that balances practicality, elegance and everyday livability.
