This kitchen was created for a striking new-build home in Wanaka, designed for an empty-nest couple seeking a contemporary space that reflected both the dramatic Central Otago landscape and the home’s distinctive architectural form. Positioned to capture panoramic views, the kitchen was envisioned as the practical and social heart of the home, supporting everyday living, working from home and frequent entertaining for family and friends.

Engaged during the architectural design phase, Hannah Withy of Double Black Design was tasked with creating a kitchen that responded to the home’s asymmetrical architecture while delivering exceptional functionality and long-term usability. Drawing inspiration from the building’s angular forms and batten detailing, the design establishes a strong visual connection between the kitchen and the wider interior. An angled batten feature above the hob reinforces this relationship, adding architectural interest and texture.

The material palette combines matte black cabinetry, warm honey oak finishes, and durable Florim porcelain, balancing refined sophistication with raw, natural character. Carefully considered lighting enhances the architectural detailing and creates a welcoming atmosphere throughout the space.

Functionality was central to every design decision. A generously proportioned island provides preparation space, casual dining, storage and serving areas while making the most of the spectacular views. A dedicated scullery and bar allow secondary tasks to be carried out separately, ensuring the main kitchen remains efficient and uncluttered when entertaining. The result is a highly functional yet visually striking kitchen that successfully balances architectural expression, everyday practicality and contemporary luxury, creating a space that feels both grounded in its environment and perfectly tailored to its owners’ lifestyle.
