Designed for a newly retired couple, this extensive renovation and addition transformed the home into a bright, welcoming environment centred around cooking, entertaining and everyday living. The brief called for a timeless kitchen, scullery and bar that would support the clients’ love of hosting while providing a highly functional workspace tailored to the primary cook’s needs.

A key challenge was the location of the kitchen and scullery within the centre of the home, with no access to natural light. Early in the design process, skylights were introduced to flood the space with daylight, transforming what could have been a dark interior into an inviting and vibrant hub. The open U-shaped kitchen was carefully planned to support baking, preserving and food preparation, with generous bench space, premium appliances and extensive open shelving for pantry items and preserves.

The adjoining scullery was designed as a hardworking secondary workspace, accommodating food storage, small appliances, breakfast preparation and clean-up functions. Double reeded-glass pocket doors allow the scullery to operate as either an extension of the kitchen or a concealed utility space, depending on the occasion. A dedicated bar with open shelving and integrated storage further enhances the home’s entertaining capability.

A warm palette of dark timber cabinetry and striking Dekton surfaces delivers the understated elegance sought by the clients. The result is a highly functional yet timeless space that balances practicality, sociability and architectural refinement.
