As part of a full home renovation, Nook + Niche was designed to help a much-loved family home adapt to a new stage of life. With the homeowners’ children transitioning into young adulthood and preparing for university, the family saw an opportunity to reimagine their living spaces to better support changing needs while celebrating the home’s mid-century character.

A key challenge was a large living room that lacked purpose and structure, alongside the absence of a dedicated workspace. Day-to-day administration and work-related activities had gradually spilled into shared family areas, creating visual clutter and reducing functionality.

The design solution centred on a bespoke timber joinery partition that seamlessly integrates a home office within the existing living space. Rather than enclosing the workspace, open shelving was used to define separate zones while maintaining visual connection and allowing natural light to flow freely throughout the room. The result is a flexible, light-filled environment that feels both purposeful and inviting.

Carefully balanced open and closed storage provides opportunities to display treasured objects while concealing everyday necessities, supporting improved organisation and a calmer interior. Natural timber was selected to introduce warmth, texture, and richness, reconnecting the home to its mid-century roots while complementing existing furnishings and architectural features.

The finished design transforms an underutilised space into a practical and beautifully resolved environment that supports modern family living.
