Set within a new-build retirement home on an elevated rural site overlooking the Pacific Ocean, No Stone Unturned is a kitchen designed to balance everyday functionality with the demands of large family gatherings. Created for a retired couple who regularly host children and grandchildren, the kitchen serves as both the practical heart and social centre of the home.
At the core of the design is a sculptural faceted quartzite island, inspired by the home’s architectural geometry and the surrounding landscape. The leathered stone features sea-green and earthy tones that reflect the ocean and natural environment, while changing light throughout the day accentuates its texture and form.
Despite an extensive brief that included four ovens, multiple refrigeration zones, three sinks, two dishwashers, generous storage and a fully equipped scullery, the kitchen maintains a calm and uncluttered appearance. A 13-metre wall of custom wire-brushed oak joinery conceals appliances, storage and access to the scullery, creating visual continuity between the kitchen and adjoining living spaces.
Natural materials, including timber, brick and stone, strengthen the connection between interior and exterior, while an oversized skylight floods the space with natural light. The result is a highly functional yet architecturally refined kitchen that brings family, landscape and home together.
