This renovation transformed a small, inefficient kitchen into a spacious and highly functional hub tailored to the lifestyle of a couple who love to cook and entertain. Designed as part of a wider renovation of the kitchen and adjoining living areas, the project sought to create a space that felt deeply connected to the home’s existing mid-century and Japanese-inspired architectural character, while significantly improving functionality, storage and flow.
Engaged from the earliest concept stage through to completion, Michelle Gillbanks of Kitchens by Design worked closely with the clients to develop a design that balanced practicality with warmth and craftsmanship. A defining influence was the home’s extensive oak wall panelling, which informed the material palette and helped establish a strong sense of continuity between the kitchen, dining and living spaces. Rich timber finishes, brass detailing and carefully integrated ambient lighting create a calm, welcoming environment suited to both everyday use and entertaining.
The redesign focused on increasing storage and bench space while improving workflow and usability. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, a generous pantry, under-counter refrigeration and freezer drawers, and custom joinery solutions ensure every centimetre is used efficiently. Removing an existing window unlocked valuable wall space, allowing for a more effective layout and significantly greater storage capacity.
The completed kitchen seamlessly blends contemporary functionality with the home’s architectural identity. Thoughtfully planned and meticulously detailed, it provides a warm and inviting space for cooking, dining and gathering, while remaining authentic to the character and design language of the wider home.
