Lodore Circle is a thoughtfully designed family kitchen created for a family of four building their first home in New Zealand. Designed to support an active lifestyle centred around cooking, nutrition and family connection, the kitchen serves as the heart of the home, providing a welcoming space for everyday living as well as entertaining friends and extended family.

Working within a carefully managed budget, the design focused on maximising functionality and visual impact through thoughtful planning, proportion and detailing. Every aspect of the clients’ wish list was incorporated, including integrated appliances, generous refrigeration, dedicated small-appliance storage, practical preparation zones and durable, low-maintenance surfaces designed to withstand busy family life.

A sculptural curved island forms the focal point of the space, offering expansive preparation areas while encouraging natural interaction and movement. The gentle curves soften the room’s geometry and were intentionally designed to complement the flowing lines of the architectural ceiling bulkhead, creating a strong visual relationship between the kitchen and the surrounding interior. Positioned within the open-plan living area, the island also provides an informal gathering point where family and guests can comfortably connect without interrupting meal preparation.

A warm timber-look finish is balanced with a calm neutral palette and a textured feature splashback, adding depth and character while maintaining a timeless aesthetic. Carefully selected materials deliver warmth, durability and longevity without compromising the project’s budget objectives.

The result is a highly functional and welcoming kitchen that successfully balances practicality, style and family living, creating a central hub designed to be enjoyed for years to come.
