Designed for clients who love to entertain, this kitchen forms the heart of a contemporary pavilion-style home overlooking Lake Wānaka. The brief called for a sophisticated space that maximised views, encouraged social connection, and integrated seamlessly with both the architecture and surrounding landscape. Positioned at the end of a generous living and dining pavilion, the kitchen needed to make a strong architectural statement while maintaining a refined and understated presence.
The design is organised around a practical L-shaped layout that creates a natural connection between indoor and outdoor living areas. A dramatic rear cooking zone forms the visual anchor of the space, featuring dual under-bench ovens, a flush-mounted cooktop and a custom stone-clad bulkhead that conceals the extraction system. Expansive windows flood the workspace with natural light while framing spectacular alpine views.
A concealed working pantry extends the kitchen’s functionality, housing integrated refrigeration, additional storage and everyday appliances behind seamless joinery. This hidden support zone allows the main kitchen to remain calm, uncluttered and perfectly suited to entertaining.
At the centre of the design, a generously proportioned island combines preparation, washing and storage functions while creating a welcoming gathering place for family and guests. Its elegant curved form softens the overall composition and echoes other sculptural elements throughout the home.
Natural stone, blonded oak veneer, black-tinted concrete flooring and warm cedar-lined ceilings create a sophisticated, timeless palette that reflects the surrounding landscape. The result is a beautifully detailed kitchen that balances architectural refinement, exceptional functionality and effortless lakeside living.
