This heritage apartment renovation transformed a cramped bathroom and separate laundry into a refined, contemporary retreat tailored to the needs of a tall bachelor. The project focused on maximising functionality, improving flow, and creating a calm, minimalist space that seamlessly combines daily grooming and laundry activities within a single, cohesive design.

The key design challenge was working within the constraints of a heritage building while accommodating the client’s requirement for increased shower height. By identifying and reclaiming unused volume within the roof cavity, the design team created a striking 3.5-metre-high shower space that not only solved the practical height issue but also introduced a dramatic sense of scale and openness. A textured stone feature wall enhances this verticality, adding warmth, texture, and understated luxury.

To respect the apartment’s heritage character, contemporary elements were carefully balanced with bespoke timber detailing, including custom wood cabinetry and a handcrafted recycled timber and aged-glass cavity slider. These features create a seamless connection between the building’s historic charm and the clean lines of the modern interior.

The result is a sophisticated, light-filled sanctuary that demonstrates how thoughtful design can overcome challenging site constraints, delivering a highly functional and visually striking space that honours the heritage of the building while meeting the needs of modern living.
