Set within a character-filled 100-year-old villa, Japandi Soul is a thoughtfully reimagined family bathroom that balances everyday practicality with a sense of calm and retreat. Designed for a household of two adults and three teenage boys, the brief called for a highly functional shared space that would also provide a sanctuary for the homeowner, all within the constraints of an existing compact footprint.
Working within the original room envelope, the design retained all walls, windows, and door locations while dramatically improving the layout and flow. The beautiful original sash window became the focal point of the room, with a back-to-wall bath positioned beneath it to create a peaceful space for relaxation. Strategic replanning of the plumbing fixtures eliminated previous congestion points, resulting in a more spacious and intuitive layout.
Inspired by the warmth and simplicity of Japandi design, the material palette combines natural textures and timeless finishes, including travertine-look tiles, handmade-style Zellige feature tiles, timber veneer cabinetry, and brushed brass tapware. Soft curves in the bath and vanity help soften the compact space, creating a serene and welcoming atmosphere.
Functionality was equally important, with a fully enclosed shower, underfloor heating, heated towel rails, and generous storage integrated through a double-drawer vanity and recessed mirror cabinet. Durable, low-maintenance finishes ensure the space is easy to care for, delivering a timeless bathroom that honours the villa’s character while supporting modern family life.
