Dunes is a coastal new-build home shaped by a deep connection to place, family and the natural beauty of the Mangawhai inlet. Designed for a retired couple rebuilding on a site they had cherished for more than fifty years, the project transformed a much-loved bach into a forever home where family, friends and future generations could gather and connect.

From the earliest stages of the architectural design through to completion, the focus was on creating a seamless relationship between the interior and its remarkable surroundings. The kitchen, dining and bar areas were conceived as a unified entertaining hub, positioned to maximise uninterrupted views across the turquoise inlet, rolling sand dunes and expansive coastline. Whether preparing a meal, sharing a drink or hosting family gatherings, the design ensures everyone remains connected to both the landscape and one another.

Material selections were inspired directly by the coastal environment. Warm timber finishes echo the tones of dune grasses and sand, while soft greys and richly patterned quartzite reflect the movement and colours of the sea. Custom-designed pendant lights, created specifically for the project, draw inspiration from the sculptural forms of the surrounding dunes, adding a distinctive architectural feature to the space.

Throughout the lengthy design and build journey, careful attention was paid to maintaining a consistent vision while balancing practicality, budget and craftsmanship. The result is a refined yet relaxed home where the kitchen and entertaining spaces form the true heart of family life, celebrating connection, hospitality and the timeless beauty of the coast.
