Designed for a family beach house just moments from the shoreline, this versatile second living space was created to provide a comfortable retreat while enhancing the home’s ability to accommodate family and friends. Intended for a couple and their three teenage children, the space reflects the relaxed rhythm of coastal living, offering both a place for quiet relaxation and a social hub for gatherings.

During the design process, changing site constraints reduced the home’s overall footprint, prompting a re-evaluation of a small spare room adjacent to the kitchen. Rather than functioning as a compact bedroom, the space was reimagined as a cosy secondary lounge connected to the main living areas. By opening part of the wall between the kitchen and the room, a stronger visual connection was established, creating a seamless flow while maintaining the flexibility of separate living zones.

Material continuity plays a key role in the design. Reclaimed oak veneer cabinetry, timber flooring and soft textured drapery mirror the finishes used throughout the home, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere. A custom-designed built-in unit incorporates television storage, a discreet bar and generous cabinetry while maintaining a light and uncluttered appearance.

The result is a warm and versatile living space that supports multiple ways of living, whether hosting friends, enjoying family movie nights or retreating with a book. Thoughtfully connected to the kitchen and broader home, it delivers both functionality and a relaxed coastal character.
