Nestled above Lake Wānaka with sweeping alpine views, Alpine Med is a kitchen renovation that blends contemporary Mediterranean influences with the practical requirements of modern family living. Designed for a semi-retired couple who use the home as a secondary residence for hosting visiting family and grandchildren, the project transformed a dated and inefficient kitchen into a sophisticated, highly functional hub.

Working within the constraints of an existing concrete slab and tilt-slab construction meant the layout needed to remain largely unchanged, requiring careful planning to maximise functionality without relocating plumbing or altering major structural elements. The design focuses on creating intuitive workflow, generous circulation and efficient storage while maintaining a calm and refined aesthetic.

Inspired by the home’s pavilion-style architecture, the material palette combines dark stained timber textures with crisp white cabinetry and elegant stone surfaces. Rich timber elements introduce warmth and character, while porcelain and engineered stone selections provide durability, low maintenance and timeless appeal. Copper-toned details and layered finishes enhance the sense of sophistication without overwhelming the space.

A concealed utility and coffee station incorporates the existing hot water cylinder, internet equipment and additional storage behind pocket doors, allowing secondary tasks to occur independently from the main preparation zone. Grouping the pantry and refrigeration areas further improves functionality and creates an efficient food storage hub for everyday use and entertaining.

The result is a refined and highly practical kitchen that balances Mediterranean-inspired warmth with contemporary simplicity, delivering a significant transformation in both functionality and visual appeal while remaining perfectly suited to its remarkable alpine setting.
