NKBA Conference Edition

Welcome members to our NKBA newsletter, Conference edition.

Firstly congratulations to all our National NKBA Award winners from 2015 Conference held in Napier on 31 July and 1 August.

We hope you will enjoy some of the shared photos, there will be more available on the NKBA website under the Members only area so you will need to logon to access.

According to our survey, Conference 2015 was thoroughly enjoyed, Napier was wonderful turning on fabulous weather for us.

Format this year was different following consultation with our Sponsors, no tradestands and a more interactive programme. CDS Retreat was inspiring as always, members only on Thursday and then welcoming NKBA designers for Friday, with Fisher & Paykel’s Designed to Match event being a highlight. Finishing at 3pm gave us time to explore Napier and the Hawkes Bay. Combining CDS and NKBA was a good use of time and meant that time away from work wasn’t too long, again following feedback from members.

Conference is in Dunedin on 29 and 30 July 2016 and planning has commenced already!
We will have the programme out early to assist with planning.

The AGM saw two new Executive members nominated, welcome to Trish Frankland from Trish Frankland Design as our South Island
Representative and Nick Thompson from Fisher & Paykel as the Auckland and Northland Representative. A remit was passed unanimously aligning the timeframe a Board member may serve on the Executive. AGM minutes are available on the website.

With the industry ever evolving it is important that we grow and evolve with it. The NKBA Executive are dedicated to represent our members and industry. We are lucky that we have a team of such qualified individuals whose expertise is varied and gives us greater coverage.

Thank you also to those Chapter chairs and Chapter committee members for your commitment to your Chapter, we appreciate you volunteering your time and energy to our Association. Please get behind your Chapter and support, remember the more you put in the more you get out.

An awards survey will be sent out next week where we want your feedback. With changes made last year to the Regional awards there are various options and further discussion is required. A review of the awards programme is in progress and we will keep you informed in the upcoming newsletters, via our website and Chapter meetings.

Daylight hours are a bit longer and spring is in the air, don’t forget to take time to enjoy!

Kind Regards
Suzie Rees, Executive Officer

Certified Designers Society Retreat 2015

CDS Retreat is generally perceived as a relaxing and cosy get away, but if you are a member of The Certified Designers Society, you are really in for a treat when you opt into the fold and come along. How does this sound - assembling complex lightshades, learning the Charleston whilst wearing full fancy dress, breakfast in a box whilst travelling on a bus, photography 101, food and wine tasting before lunchtime, designing wine labels? Relaxing - No. Fun and interactive with new and familiar faces - YES!

CDS annual Retreat is a time of year where the society hosts educational and fun workshops alongside inspirational guest speakers. This year the CDS Retreat was held in conjunction with the NKBA National Conference in Napier.

The first day was opened with a fantastic presentation by David Trubridge followed by an interactive hands on workshop where teams of CDS designers and suppliers together had to assemble one of David Trubridge’s beautiful lights ... without instructions - a task that sounds a lot easier than it is!

‘Shenanigans at the Theatre’ was an interesting evening for all, dressing in the attire of the 1930’s and learning the Charleston was a highlight for those with two left feet!
If that wasn’t enough, joined by NKBA designer members, the CDS attendees were up early and onto the bus out to Trinity Hill Winery where a very interesting talk with Richard Brimer took place. What an amazing photography profile with some fantastic tips and tricks learnt along the way too.

Into the barrel room at Trinity Hill where Fisher & Paykel had a stunning setting for their ‘Designed to Match’ food and wine tasting, a combination of interesting flavour canapés matched perfectly to Trinity Hill wines. To finish the CDS Retreat portion of the day there was one last workshop with Martin Poppelwell, a talented local artist who hosted a workshop in designing wine labels. Who would have thought the level of talent that comes to light when ink, paints and pencils are put in front of a group of designers. All in all another memorable Retreat was prepared for our members, who certainly enjoyed their time learning and networking with peers in the industry.

  Melteca

Create a space that reflects your inspiration
with Melteca® Purecoat™

Laminex New Zealand just launched Melteca® Purecoat™ panels, featuring new cutting edge technologies in surface design and protection.

The high-gloss panels are stain and scratch resistant, easy to clean and include anti-microbial properties.

Ideal for residential and commercial use, the panels are suitable for vertical applications such as drawers, cabinet doors, wall linings and large feature walls.

Available in six contemporary colours, Rob Jackson, Marketing Development Manager, believes the new product is an exciting
step forward.

“The decors in the range were chosen to complement popular residential paint colours as well as some striking bold colours to provide accents for interior statements.” “We are excited about this new edition to the Melteca family and look forward to this premium product being a regular feature in kitchens, and other interior spaces across the country.”

The Melteca Purecoat panels are produced using innovative coating technology bonded to a high quality, moisture resistant E0 MDF substrate. The coating contains no Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and the surfaces are cured using ultraviolet light.
The surface offers a higher level of scratch resistance compared to many traditional two pack paint systems, high gloss vinyl and high gloss acrylic panels.

Melteca Purecoat utilises Protect™ anti-microbial technology making it ideal for applications where hygiene is critical. Protect™ provides long term and effective antimicrobial properties, reducing the overall level of harmful bacteria in the environment and the likelihood of cross contamination. A range of high gloss matched edging is available, providing a functional and durable edge treatment.

Manufactured locally since its launch in 1983, Melteca is a New Zealand made product which has grown over the years to become a market leading pre-decorated panel that’s a regular feature in kitchens across the country.

Versatility has been the key to Melteca’s success. With a varied, design-leading colour palette, durable surfaces, and a huge range of potential applications from cupboards, drawers, shelving, furniture and vertical applications, unsurprisingly Melteca is Laminex New Zealand’s biggest seller. All products within the Melteca collection are available with the reassurance of a 7 year limited warranty.
