JUNE NEWSLETTER

It’s hard to believe we are halfway through the year and Conference 2015 is next month! Go on line and register at the link below now and make sure you are ready for a fun and informative Conference in Napier. We are working hard to create a varied programme with a different feel to it this year following feedback from our members. We hope you will enjoy it. For the first time, this year CDS have invited NKBA Designers to join CDS Retreat on Friday 31 July from 8am. An amazing day is planned so pull out stops to be there. NKBA Conference begins at 3pm on Friday 31 July.

Judging Day was at the end of May with some outstanding entries this year. It was a tough job for our judges, oh to be a fly on the wall! There will be one lucky award entrant who will win the amazing prize for a trip to KBIS 2016 sponsored by Laminex! This will be announced at the Awards Evening and the winner must be present. Our thanks goes to our judges Paul Taylor - Trends, Frances Robinson - CDS Judge, Melanie Craig - 2015 Kitchen Designer of the Year, Harry Rowntree - Jasmax and Angela Fell - Resene, for their hard work and contribution.
So you are aware, the judging process starts three weeks prior to Judging Day where the judges are sent electronic files of the images, plans and brief for each entry. These are scored individually based on Client Brief, Design & Concept, Plans and lastly Style. The results are sent to Trends and tallied for the top contenders. Judges come together on Judging Day to decide collectively the Award winners for each category and certainly includes some robust discussion to come to their final decisions. The Award winners will be announced at the Awards Dinner on Saturday 1 August in Napier, it will be an exciting event so come celebrate with our winning designers.

People’s Choice is now open on the NKBA page on my Trends platform and voting closes on Wednesday 15 July. Designers who have entered, here is your opportunity to get your network to vote for you! Enjoy checking all the entries out and guessing who designed which kitchen or bathroom. One vote per kitchen and one vote per bathroom is counted, multiple votes are not accumulated. Go ahead and vote for your favourite.

Looking forward to seeing you at Conference, if you haven’t done so already, go register now!

Kind Regards
Suzie Rees, Executive Officer

  Hafele - Folding Concepta

Hawa Folding Concepta 25

For some time now, the architectural trend has been moving away from small rooms towards large, open rooms with multifunctional utilisation options. However, only now has an innovative hardware system become available that meets these demands across the entire width: the new Hawa-Folding Concepta 25.

It enables the entire cabinet widths of up to 2800 mm to disappear flush with the side of the cabinet in a single smooth movement. The future of creative application designs is literally wide open: from an office recess in the guest bedroom to a utility room in the bathroom and a kitchen in the living room, the freedom of design is virtually boundless.

The Hawa-Folding Concepta 25 bi-folds two doors and slides them into the side niche. This makes the innovative system all the more spatially economic: the slide-in loss is a mere 73 mm, the recess width only 110 mm, and you even gain more freedom of movement in the room as the doors are parked away flush inside the cabinet body or recess when the front is open.
Hawa’s high-quality scissor technology guarantees that doors move easily and quietly without ever jamming. By the way, the gap pattern presented to the beholder is as calm as the doors are quiet. Especially as the flush, uniform front design for a cabinet or kitchen front is also possible in combination with Hawa-Concepta 25/30/50 or with hinged doors.

FEATURES:
Full access for cabinet widths up to 2800mm and door heights up to 2600mm.
Open doors do not protrude into the room.
Customised front designs with inlaying, semi-inlaying and overlaying doors.
Aesthetic appeal: an aluminium cover conceals the hinge when the door is in the recess.
The second door has a ball-bearing trolley to prevent sagging.
All adjustments are easily made from the front.

New Kitchen Things store opens in Tauranga

The month of May saw Kitchen Things open a new store in Tauranga (65 Chapel Street) which takes the national count up to nineteen.

The official launch, attended by local NKBA members and brand representatives, took place on May 6th. With drinks flowing and Vietnamese-inspired canapés circling, Mark Jones, Kitchen Things Executive Chairman, introduced the Tauranga team with Brian Stewart being named as the Store Manager. The evening ended with an interactive cooking demonstration from Smeg-ambassador Vanessa Baxter.

The new Tauranga edition is one of eight Kitchen Things stores that offer fully functional cooking theatres. These facilities are managed by professionally trained cooking technology tutors who are available to demonstrate an array of product functionalities to in-store customers. These facilities also serve as a great space for in-store events like book signings, product launches and design seminars.

Formica - Last Call for Entries

Last call for entries!

Formica Formations, the highly innovative design competition from Laminex New Zealand, closes on July 31, 2015. Entrants have until this date to submit initial drawings of their creative and unique lighting designs featuring Formica brand laminate.

Beginning in 2011, the inaugural competition challenged professionals and emerging designers to come up with creative concepts for chairs using Formica laminates. In 2013 the challenge was issued to recreate the humble Formica laminate table as part of the 100 year celebrations of the Formica brand.

In 2015 Laminex New Zealand looked to further spark New Zealand’s design creativity with Luminate, a challenge to re-imagine how we interpret lighting hardware, fixtures and applications for the New Zealand and global stage using Formica laminate.
There are two entry categories – professional architects and designers, and emerging architects and designers who are studying or within four years of graduation. The judging panel consists of design industry icons Renee Hytry Derrington of Formica North America, Ron Sang and David Trubridge. The winning designs will by fully fabricated by Laminex New Zealand and displayed at an official awards ceremony in November 2015. Winners and runners up will also receive a generous cash prize and will be recognised in Laminex New Zealand publications.

There’s no time to waste – get your entries in today!

  Smeg Art - Design Competition

SMEG Art Designs Raise $10,000
for Ronald McDonald House

The 2014/15 Smeg Art Design Competition has exceeded expectations, raising just under $10,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities New Zealand to help countless Kiwi kids in their time of need.

The Smeg Art Design Competition has been running for three years with contestants challenged to design their own quirky concept to transform the well known Smeg FAB28 retro refrigerators.

Sketched submissions are judged by heavyweight New Zealand designers Tim Webber, Mal Corby, Kiri Nathan and Dave Sotogi, with the four most outstanding designs then invited to create the design on an actual fridge. The final creations were then taken on tour before being auctioned on Trade Me raising much needed proceeds for Ronald McDonald House.
First to be auctioned was Nikolai Sorenson’s ‘KNIT’ concept, which raised $1,785.

Julie Ashby’s ‘ELEGANZA’ design then hit the auction block and sold for $1,680.

Lastly, Aleisha Staton’s design ‘DIRECTION OF THE FUTURE’ sold for $1,799.

And overall competition winner Matt Blackmore’s ‘AROUND THE WORLD’ fridge raised $4,676.

“We’re incredibly grateful that so many people came together, putting in time and effort to make this event a success,” said Wayne Howett of Ronald McDonald House Charities New Zealand.

  Disappearing Sink

Burns & Ferrall disappearing sink

The new Integrato range of sinks from Burns & Ferrall are designed to become part of the bench, creating a continuous plane from bench to sink to accessories. Each model comes complete with the glass sink cover/chopping board, stainless steel colander and stainless steel dish rack.

The colander and dish rack sit upon a ledge just below the flange allowing them to be neatly stored beneath the glass cover. The glass cover along with the bamboo chopping board and stainless steel draining tray sit flush with the flange.
The engineering excellence of this range goes to the next level in the double bowls which boast a 3mm knife edge bridge. This feature minimises splashing from water hitting the bridge and also enables maximum sink volume within the cabinet beneath the sink.

To view the entire range visit www.burnsferrall.co.nz or contact your local sales representative.
