  Formica Luminate
Lighting up design: Formica Formation 2015
Laminex New Zealand has announced that its highly innovative Formica Formations™ design competition is to run again in 2015 celebrating and showcasing the creativity of architects and designers throughout New Zealand.

Beginning in 2011, the inaugural competition challenged professionals and emerging designers to come up with creative concepts for chairs using Formica laminate. In 2013 the challenge was issued to recreate the humble Formica laminate table as part of the 100 year celebrations of the Formica brand.
Auckland designer Hugh Worth was awarded first place in the professional category of the competition, with the ‘Red Herringbone’ - a striking and colourful table comprising angular pieces of Formica AR+ gloss laminate.

Recent graduate Frances Fraser of Wellington created the ‘Time Table’, inspired by the rings of a tree representing the incremental growth and strength in trust and understanding that builds up over time through shared meal time experiences with family and friends.

In 2015 Laminex New Zealand is looking to further spark New Zealand’s design creativity. What does the now and the tomorrow look like when Formica lights the way? How can the extreme versatility of the Formica laminate range be integrated into the form and function of lighting? Laminex New Zealand challenges architects and designers to re-imagine how we interpret lighting hardware, fixtures and applications for the New Zealand and global stage – using Formica laminate.

24 “Formica laminate has all the qualities of a versatile, trusted and respected material. The Formica brand has endured 100 years of industrial and technological change and continues to offer design flexibility and creative opportunities for both residential and commercial projects,” says Richard Pollington, General Manager of Laminex New Zealand, the company that custodians the Formica brand in New Zealand.

“The Formica Formations competition allows the New Zealand design community to do what it does best – create, inspire and excite.”
A diverse and high-calibre judging panel comprising of industry icons Renee Hytry Derrington, Ron Sang and David Trubridge will be reviewing the entries for the 2015 competition which ensures that judging is to an extremely high international standard. The winners in each category will have their concepts brought to life through fabrication by local manufacturing specialists.

There are two entry categories – professional architects and designers, and emerging architects and designers. Entries close on 31 July 2015, with submissions and further information available at The winner’s designs will be displayed at an official awards ceremony towards the end of 2015.

  Smeg Art
SMEG KITCHEN ART-To Be Auctioned Off for Children’s Charity
Smeg New Zealand is giving the public the opportunity to bid on one of four stunning pieces of contemporary design to enhance their home or off ice, while supporting the families of seriously ill children..

This is your chance to bid for your favourite winning entry from the recent Smeg Art Design Competition. The Smeg FAB28 retro refrigerators had stunning makeovers by four New Zealand designers; Nikolai Sorensen (design: Knit), Julie Ashby (design: Eleganza), Matt Blackmore (design: Around the World) and Aleisha Stanton (design: The Direction of the Future).

These highly functional works of art are currently on display at Kitchen Things Auckland stores and are all being individually auctioned off through Trade Me. The auction process has started with Nikolai’s fantastic ‘KNIT’ design, each fridge will be under the hammer for an extended 14 day period, each in succession of each other For all auction details visit the Smeg Art website or search ‘Smeg Art’ on Trade Me.

Knit by Nikolai Sorensen is on auction until the 2nd of February (click here to see the auction page). “KNIT utilises a traditional material, merino wool, in an innovative way. The knitted sleeve was created by the designer together with the Textile Design Lab at AUT, using a 3-D printer, in a process normally reserved for garment making. The cover fits snugly over the fridge and the pattern represents icicles.”

The refrigerators are being auctioned to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities New Zealand, the New Zealand chapter of the philanthropic arm of the McDonalds Corporation. RMHC’s mission is to help keep families strong when a child is battling a
24 serious medical condition. RMH ensures that families can remain together throughout their medical journey so that they can find the combined strength to get through whatever challenges the coming days, weeks or months may hold for them.

  Resene - Best Neutrals Together
The new The Range Whites & Neutrals fandeck from Resene has been released with everything you need for white or neutral colour schemes. It includes favourites from the last fandeck together with new on trend neutrals and extra variations of popular Resene neutrals; the best of the best of Resene whites and neutrals.  Resene has also gathered in popular wood stain and non-skid colours so you have everything you need in one handy fandeck.

While there is a trend to some creams, such as Resene Clotted Cream in The Range fashion colours, we’re still seeing a strong trend towards neutrals with a hint of green in them, such as Resene Thorndon Cream and greige on the upswing as beige hues move to greyed off versions.  Beige is still big, but greige offers a new sleeker alternative for those looking for something new.

Those specifying Resene products and colours, can order The Range Whites & Neutrals fandeck on the Resene website along with a host of other Resene colour tools,

The individual loose palettes of whites and neutrals are also being updated to match the updated fandeck selection.
