2014 had brought changes for us with the incoming of a new President in August, thanks to Ingrid Geldof for the investment over your term and your time, energy and passion for our Association. Each president brings their own flavour and we have already seen the new direction that Heather Wood is bringing in guiding the Executive and our Association to new heights and what a great leader she is!

Our heartfelt thanks to our Chapter Chairs and Committee Members for your efforts over the past year both outgoing and incoming. What you contribute on a local level is invaluable and we appreciate what you do.
2015 brings new developments with the introduction of the TIDA's by Trends which will give our Supreme Kitchen and Bathroom Award winners, plus CDS Kitchen and Bathroom Award winners the opportunity to be entered directly in the TIDA's (more information below).

Laminex NZ are providing the fantastic opportunity to visit KBIS 2016. Every valid 2015 NKBA Award entry will be eligible for the prize draw (more information below). Awards are open now, please go to website for the entry form and information.

Finally it is with sadness that we will be saying goodbye to Teresa when the office closes on Friday 19th December. Teresa and her family are making the big shift to Canada early next year. We would like to acknowledge Teresa. I have so appreciated her efficiency and lovely friendly way.   The improvement in marketing our newsletter, facebook and website developments are all a direct result of her hard work. Thank you Teresa and on behalf of our members we wish you and your family all the best - keep warm!

  NKBA Conference 2015
conference and awards
There has been some revision on the awards for 2015 with the most significant being the merging of some of the Regions in the Regional Award Categories. This was done based on the review of the past several year's statistics on Regional Award entries.

The Executive believes the current Regional award categories do not reflect the integrity of the awards. These have been reduced from 9 Regional Awards (based on Chapters) to 5 Regions as follows:

1. Auckland Region
2. Central Region (includes Waikato, BOP,
Hawkes Bay and Taranaki)
3. Wellington Region
4. Canterbury and Top of the South Regions
5. Southern Region

The Best use of Lighting Category has been removed and the Kitchen Under $20k Category has been increased to under $25k.

We would like to announce that the Student Award has been revised and there will no longer be the Student Category in the Trends Awards. This will now be known as the NKBA Student Design Competition and has a $2,000 scholarship as the prize plus additional benefits. Open to NKBA Students only. Details are available on the NKBA Website.

  Trends International Design Awards
Trends International Design Awards
For more than 30 years, Trends has built up a close relationship with the kitchen industry in countries where the company has been active with print editions and, more recently, through its digital and online media.

This has included involvement in various Association kitchen and bathroom awards programs as well as less formal relationships with other sectors of the kitchen industry through individual contacts.
We believe that it's timely to consolidate the various groups in the kitchen market, and that promotion of the industry as a whole would be beneficial to all involved.

The Trends International Design Awards (TIDAs), launching in 2015, provide the perfect opportunity to take this step forward.
The initial launch is for New Zealand and Australia with the aim of bringing USA West Coast and other selected states, Singapore and Malaysia into the program in 2016, and then potentially India and China.
24 The TIDAs will provide a pathway for the winners of existing Association awards to be judged on an international stage alongside the winners of Trends' own awards programs.

The promotion of the TIDAs will bring additional recognition and prestige to designers and the awards programs that they represent.
The TIDA program has begun with kitchen awards, and will extend quickly to other aspects of the home such as bathrooms, interiors, new builds and renovations.

What Trends brings to the TIDAs is its established, international relationships within the industry, its expertise in running effective awards programs and its wide reach through a range of media for pre- and post-promotion of the awards and the winners.
  Habitat Plus
discover your style
Many clients struggle to decide what decorating style they like and want to live with. It's the reason home and renovation magazines are so popular as homeowners pore over the photographs, searching for a look that resonates, trying to find a like-minded homeowner who has already achieved the look they desire.

But with a bit of confidence and good advice, it's fairly easy for someone to discover their own style, even if it's not the look that's populating the pages of the magazines. It's easy to get swept up in the fashion of the moment but there's no use embracing what's trendy if it fundamentally doesn't suit. Few of us are chameleons who change our tastes with the wind. Rather, we're more likely to add fashionable accessories that complement our interiors, to keep things fresh and to feel we are up to date.
24 New Habitat plus - discover your style is designed to help decorators find the style that best suits them and then use that to inspire their choices.  It's a handy way to get your client thinking about their colour choices and the styles that they feel comfortable with.

Copies of Resene Habitat Plus are available free at Resene ColorShops and resellers, online at or email us at with your name, business name and postal address and we'll post you a copy.

  Celebrating 80 years of Innovation
This year Fisher & Paykel turns 80.
80 is a milestone for any business, but most importantly for a consumer-facing design brand.

They have a unique recorded history of design objects that have played a role in people's lives over generations. Innovation has been core to their survival and understanding the changing needs of millions of customers around the globe to help shape what they do.

They see the 80th birthday as not about looking to the past but recognising their history as a platform to continue the founders' pursuit of the pioneering and entrepreneurial mindset - to go out into the world and give customers products that they aspire to live with; that fulfil needs; and make their lives easier.
