Did you know……under the New Zealand building code clause G3 that you need 800mm+ an open door/drawer clearance between benches in all kitchens. Not specifically commercial, disabled or serviced apartment kitchens.

This potentially puts your Island 1400 away from your back benches. If your council want to enforce this (it’s low on their radar) you have to provide proof that there is adequate access to and around the kitchen to justify a lesser clearance.

Want to know more….read the code or attend a NZQA kitchen design course.

The Trends Bathroom Award

This month we spoke with Davinia about her design approach and some of the studio values and processes.

How would describe your design style?
We have a Bespoke, timeless approach to our design aesthetic. As every project is different, as a result the design dependent on the clients needs, taste, budget and spaces. I do not create a cookie cutter design but aim to create a design that meets, exceeds, and enhances our client's spaces and home and maximises the value of their home.

How do you stay on trend?
We invest time into product knowledge, which is key. We try to avoid short term 'Trends', but keep our approach simple and look at the big picture for our projects.
17 Where do you draw your inspiration?
We draw on inspiration from many forms - the surrounding architecture, furniture, lighting, materials and clients brief.

When dealing with clients, how do you decipher their requests and style preferences?

We have an in-depth design process which we journey with our clientele. This helps define their vision and style preferences.

What is the most satisfying part of your job?
I really enjoy renovations, one takes a broken/ non-functional space and transforms it into our clients dreams. These projects are often the most challenging as the brief or space can be restricted, but this in turns, often provides the most reward for both client and designer.

What is your biggest achievement to date?
Creating an award wining design business that is constantly striving to produce the best result for our cliental, this for me is the strongest achievement,
especially after the journey we have been through in the Christchurch market.

What is one of the most over looked aspects of Kitchen/Bathroom design?
Lighting. This is often overlook aspect of a kitchen/ bathroom design, as often it is a design element that is rushed at the end of a design process,
and is really a key to a good functioning space - not only from a safety aspect, but also critical as a functional and aesthetic sense.

AWA Folding-Concepta 25 by Häfele

HAWA-Folding Concepta 25 combines folding and sliding in a single hardware set. That makes it an ideal solution for multi-functional room layouts. The cabinet front is fully flush when closed, the folding doors can be conveniently stowed inside pockets, and the full width of the cabinet is accessible when open – all of which makes it the perfect choice for modern residential interiors. A uniform cabinet front design is also possible in combination with HAWA-Concepta 25/30/50 pivot/slide-in hardware.

Whether for an office corner in the spare room, a utility room in the bathroom, or a kitchen in the living room, the HAWA-Folding Concepta 25 is ideal for customised front designs: folding fronts allow cabinets to be opened to the full extent, and in the closed position they present a uniform gap pattern.

HAWA-Folding Concepta 25 simplifies cabinet designs – a bonus for installers whatever their concept. Integrated profiles for body and side connections allow designs with overlaying doors, while an optional profile reinforcing the cabinet top makes it possible to install fronts up to 2800 mm wide without a middle wall. Easy adjustment with front access simplifies assembly and an additional trolley prevents bending or sagging of the second door. Securely fitted to the structure, the system provides a long-term solution.
