I have recently returned from nearly three weeks away in Europe and it was straight back to work the next day - so no rest for the wicked! My trip included two and a half days at EuroCucina, plus two tours generously hosted by Blum and Cosentino. It was a first for me and I had an incredible time. Even though this was a personally funded trip it was 100% worth it with the friendships I developed within our industry and the knowledge I gained of the latest products and trends. Since my return Donna has finalised the 2016 Excellence in Design Awards entry platform - hosted completely on the NKBA website. The Board, Judges, Davy & Chapman, Donna and I have worked hard to bring you a fresh new look for the 2016 Awards with new categories and conditions. New Case Studies


In March, Fisher & Paykel opened the doors on their first Australasian-based Fisher & Paykel Experience Centre in Sydney, designed to inspire and empower customers, designers, architects and specifiers during the research and planning phase of their kitchen design journey. A step away from the traditional retail showroom, the highly curated space displays a key selection of Fisher & Paykel and DCS Grill Outdoor products as they would appear in the home, supported by interactive technology that provides additional product information to give customers a hands-on, educational experience.

The purpose of the Experience Centre is not to replace the retail environment, but to complement it by simplifying the design process so the customer can easily create a wish list to take on to a specifier or retail store. Fisher & Paykel has also opened a new-look Experience Centre in New York to cater for the brand’s growing North American market and is in

the process of progressively rolling out elements of the Experience Centre design and digital technology to New Zealand retail environment, with the first examples now in place in Auckland locations with more locations to follow soon.

The introduction of the new generation displays are part of the company’s continued strategy to present a consistent and premium brand through all customer touch points. The timing of the new displays has also coincided with a change in retail distribution partners in the New Zealand market. After a mutually beneficial arrangement over the past six years, Fisher & Paykel’s retail agreement with Kitchen Things came to an end on 31 March 2016. Fisher & Paykel has been liaising closely with Kitchen Things to ensure a smooth transition with minimal disruption to both businesses and will honour all stock commitments until 30 June 2016. Minimalist kitchens and furniture with handle-less fronts have remained a strong design trend in 2016 and after reviewing the latest offerings at EuroCucina from the biggest design studios in the world - clean, unobstructed cabinet fronts with everything and anything integrated and concealed behind cupboard doors will be a defining feature in kitchen design for the upcoming year and beyond.

The small household appliance, in itself an object evocative of healthy daily habits, uses visual references to a not too distant past - the 1950s - to assert its modernity, combining latest generation technology and aesthetic sensibility. Its lines and colours, from candy-like brights to romantic pastels, are not capricious details, but a strong point of the design by Smeg and by Matteo Bazzicalupo and Raffaella Mangiarotti of deepdesign©. It is the second consecutive time a 50’s style small appliance wins a Red Dot Design Award (after the Smeg toaster in 2015).

The Red Dot Awards jury is made up of professional design experts from different countries and backgrounds, which ensures an extended evaluation of the intercultural aspects connected with the winning design projects – an approach particularly close to the Smeg philosophy.

ACC has decided in its collective wisdom that most Kitchen and Bathroom manufacturers are on the wrong Business Industry Classification.

ACC are in the process of changing your classifications from 29210 (Wooden furniture and upholstered seat manufacturing) at a levy rate of 0.84c per $100 to 23230 (Wooden structural fittings and components manufacturing) at $1.30 per $100.

This is an increase of 54% on your ACC levies, and they are backdating the changes for one year. Even worse news is that from Monday 4th April, the levy rate has been increased from $1.30 to $1.76 per $100.

This means that many businesses will be facing a levy increase in excess of 100%. You may have already had the letter from ACC, if so – I can help you! Contact me
