In alignment with your comments from the survey, the Awards categories have been revised. We trust you will see real value for your own business and look forward to entering into the 2016 Awards.
Our media partnership contract with Trends Publishing came up for renewal this year and the Board decided to prepare a briefing document and tender it out. The challenges and tasks were clearly documented giving the objectives we are looking for as an association.
Four shortlisted agencies were approached to tender a proposal:
- Trends - our existing partner
- Davy & Chapman
- Dock Street Group
- Create Concept
These four proposals were then evaluated and presentations by two were made at our recent Board meeting. These presentations were exciting and totally in line with the NKBA Board strategic plan.
We are thrilled to announce that Davy & Chapman have been appointed as our new creative and marketing partner www.davyandchapman.co.nz
Davy & Chapman - a company with 15 years' experience, are a passionate, creative company with vision way beyond the Awards event and have committed to ensure execution with a WOW factor.
To quote "We're taking a fresh approach to our proposal for the NKBA Awards programme for 2016 and will leverage and maximize the exposure through a holistic approach, looking at the platform for the programme, the process, the marketing and media, promotional aspects and the event".
We wish to acknowledge Trends at this time and thank them for the support they have given NKBA and our members over many years. Many designers can attest to the benefits to their businesses from being featured in Trends issues.

Fisher & Paykel’s new ActiveSmart™ Slide-In Fridge was handpicked from nearly 1000 entries to take out a Gold Pin in the Product category at the recent Best Design Awards 2015. The Best Design Awards are held annually and recognise the strongest design work across seven categories.
Fisher & Paykel Head of Design Mark Elmore says the company is honoured to be recognised with a Gold Pin for its work designing a family sized fridge that fits flush with surrounding cabinetry with just 4mm gaps.
“Through our work with designers and architects around the world it became apparent that there are few refrigeration platforms that suit the minimalistic design of the modern kitchen.
“We’re very proud of the resulting product, which sets new benchmarks in design, quality and value, and how it has been received by the specifier, designer and architect community,” says Mark Elmore.
Designers Institute of New Zealand CEO Cathy Veninga says that the Slide-In Fridge reaffirms Fisher & Paykel’s ability to identify weaknesses and flaws in the kitchen space, and the company’s commitment to work tirelessly to resolve them in an innovative way.
From left to right: Fisher & Paykel’s Mark Elmore, Diego Getar and Mark Haydon accept the Gold Pin from Designers Institute of New Zealand sponsor Desna Jury (Dean and Pro Vice Chancellor, Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies at AUT University).
“Every designer dreams of a kitchen with seamless, flush fit appliances and cabinetry. The Slide-In Fridge is a beautiful example of what can be
achieved by taking an in-depth approach to an obvious issue,” says Cathy Veninga.
The Fisher & Paykel ActiveSmart™ Slide-In Fridge has been designed to fit seamlessly within 900 x 1800mm cabinetry with only a 4mm gap. Unlike conventional fridges, it does not need clearance on either side for the door to open or for ventilation. The Slide-in model comes in high quality stainless steel, with black finish and chrome strip detail on the slim line water dispenser. The product can also be installed on a plinth so that the grill can be hidden from sight.
The Best Design Awards are organised by the Designers Institute of New Zealand and recognise the strongest design work produced in seven categories – spatial, product, graphic, interactive, best effect, public good and a category that showcases multicultural collaboration. Entries judged Best in each category are awarded the Gold Pin.
Fisher & Paykel’s latest cooktop innovation, the Flush Gas on Steel, also won at this year’s Best Design Awards, taking a Silver Pin. The high-performance cooking product is recessed into the kitchen bench for an uncluttered look. Like Fisher & Paykel’s Slide-In Fridge, the Flush Gas on Steel has an elegant and minimalist aesthetic and is designed to complement Fisher & Paykel’s existing family of appliances. The Flush Gas on Steel received international recognition at the iF Design Awards in Germany earlier this year.

A high-end kitchen in a house in Emerald Hill, Upper Hutt has caught the eye of judges in the SBID International Design Excellence Awards in the UK.
The kitchen, designed by Damian Hannah of German Kitchens Ltd in Wellington, is one of just 18 kitchens worldwide to make the shortlist for the awards, and the only New Zealand project to make the list.
The designer says the Alno kitchen was part of an extensive home renovation for the owners, who have requested privacy. He said he could not disclose the price.
Hannah worked with the clients and the original architect’s plans to establish the layout of the kitchen and scullery, which doubles as a secondary kitchen.
The design was all about balance, and providing an even distance between key elements of the work triangle.
“This allows the eye to focus on the central point and not be overwhelmed by the sheer size of the kitchen,” he says.
Two stunning designs that really challenge the traditional concept of lighting have been selected as the winning entries in the Formica® FormationsTM Design Competition 2015. The winners were announced and the winning fabricated lamps were revealed yesterday evening at an awards function at Oram’s Marine Services in Auckland’s viaduct harbour.

The Melteca range of quality laminated panels is taking design to a new level with the introduction of nine beautiful new decors in 2015.
The Melteca brand carries a strong history of providing highly durable and stylish surfaces for residential and commercial spaces including kitchen cabinetry, bathroom vanities, shelving, workstations, furniture and retail fitouts.
Following the launch of Melteca Purecoat designer painted panels and the unveiling of a stunning new website, in September nine new colours were introduced into the Melteca quality laminated panels range.
Invigorating and refreshing the Melteca collection the new additions feature bright colours, a grey-based linen and Baikal, a contemporary neutral.
The addition of five on-trend timber patterns follow on from their successful introduction into the Formica and Laminex laminate ranges. “These new introductions provide complementary colours for both horizontal and vertical applications which are really important for commercial projects in particular. We’re really pleased to be able to introduce these unique woodgrains into the Melteca range, allowing for consistency across benchtops and cabinetry in interior commercial spaces” says Laminex New Zealand Marketing Development Manager Rob Jackson.
The texture and tactility of decorative surfaces is a growing interior design trend evidenced in European markets. This has translated into the need to expand the Melteca finish options – which now includes the beautiful, soft and subtle Satin finish available in over 50 colours.
Designed to endure the day-to-day challenges of interior environments, the Melteca range is backed by a seven year limited warranty to ensure outstanding interior looks are the envy of others year after year.
